Week 6

Dear 2008 picks racers,

Welcome to the first installment of our Picks Race blog. I was going to go back and put the first five weeks in here as well, but then I realized just how pathetically useless that would make my life look. It's one thing for it to actually be pathetically useless; it's quite another for everyone to see it.

And speaking of pathetically useless, that sums up most of us for last week as we pretty much got our collective asses handed to us. Except for one ass, that is, which remains firmly but gently cupped by its owner. Dad pulled out a, shall we say, somewhat unexpected victory with a dominant 32-15 that would have been ever more dominant had be not neglected to include Mississippi State-LSU and Alabama-Georgia in his selections or let anyone know that he was picking UConn to beat Louisville BEFORE UConn beat Louisville.

Yet those three giveaway losses were still not enough for anyone else to get closer than two games, making Ed the fifth winner in five weeks. Now that's parity, right? And are you seven people who still haven't managed to win feeling like losers yet? Don't worry about it - we'll be giving away as many coveted Sportsmanship Ribbons as necessary when this is over in February.

The Monday night game was pivotal when it came to deciding second and third as the Steelers' OT victory gave Chip a 30-17 and sole possession of the runner-up spot while Rob took third at 29-18. After that, it was fugly for the third straight week. Cullen, Bob and Lonnie tied for the worst showing at 26-21, though I, Cheryl and Lane weren't much better at 27-20. I, Cullen, Amy, Bob, Lane and Lonnie all dropped the week, but when you're trading your raw sewage for plain old shit it doesn't help all that much (incidentally, I pondered for some time which a person would rather have, raw sewage or shit, and decided on the shit. I'll be interested to hear any counter-arguments, however).

One thing I've concluded is that I've got to start giving us some easier games. Scratchers are a, pardon my German, fucking bitch, and winning scratchers pretty much always gives you the week. Ed was a mind-boggling 9-2 in this category (really 10-1 if he'd turned UConn in before Saturday morning), and to give you an idea how messed up it was to do that well nobody else was better than 5-6 and five people were 3-8 or worse (actually, the only one worse than 3-8 was Cullen's equally astonishing 2-9 showing, but I didn't want to embarrass him by singling him out).

There was little change in the overall standings. Dad is going to need a lot more 9-2 performances in scratchers to get out of the cellar, while the log jam at the top got a little bit tighter. I'm still a game ahead of Chip, who is two games ahead of Chris, who is two games ahead of Cullen, who is a game ahead of Amy, who is a game ahead of Bob, who is a game ahead of Kristy - you get the picture.

Finally, let me know what you think of this blog idea for the picks race. I'll still be sending this out in e-mail form, but I'll encourage you to leave your picks (as well as your sarcastic comments) under the comments section of this blog. Once we get used to it, I think it'll be more fun and easier.

Love the blog concept. Feel free to check out my witty blog -- nowherenearberlin.blogspot.com. Its fantabulous.

Wow, was that a funeral or what in Athens last weekend? Try sitting through that. And to make matters even worse, all of UGA's top players are injured or will miss UT in a couple of weeks. Looks like UGA is packing for the Outback bowl.

Week 6
ACC
Duke at TECH -- I picked Duke once, and that's all I can do.
Boston College at NCSU -- They have to win a game, right?
Western Kentucky at VT -- Never saw that Nebraska game coming.
Florida State at MIAMI -- Who knows but I think taking Miami is the way forward.
Connecticut at UNC -- Neither team has a QB so why not.
TURTLE EAT ME at Virginia -- Va Sucks. I mean sucks bad. Who loses like that to Duke?

SEC
FLA at Arkansas -- No flukes this week. Petrino gets another 50 put on him. Karma's a bitch.
USC at Mississippi -- Steve was not happy with UAB and will have his boys ready to play. Plus Ole Miss hangover from UF.
Kentucky at BAMA -- They played the best 1st half of football I've seen in years. It was amazing. Course, the second half proved they will lose to LSU.
DA PLAINS at Vanderbilt -- I want Vandy to win, I just don't see it happening. Rumor has it, all is not well with Franklin in Auburn.
Northern Illinois at UT -- How bad is UT this year?

SoCon
Samford at WCU -- no clue
FU at Elon -- Elon will probably win but I decided to start picking my favs.
Citadel at APPY
SOUTHERN at Chattanooga

Pac 10/Big 12 headliners
Oregon State at UTAH -- nope, not twice in a row.
TECH at Kansas State -- Harrell will go for 480.
TEXAS at Colorado -- Told you, Buffs can't win East.
MISSOU at Nebraska -- This might get ugly. Huskers aren't back yet.
Stanford at DOMERS -- I hate Thor's haircut.
Arizona State at CAL
Oregon at USC -- I'd take Oregon, but they don't have a QB.

Head-scratchers
RENDEVOUS at Alabama-Birmingham
Cincinnati at MARSHALL -- why not.
Nevada-Las Vegas at CSU
JUICE at Michigan
AKRON at Kent
Ohio State at WISCONSIN -- Pryor's over rated.

Dad's picks. I should make fun of him a lot, because he'll never read it here:

ACC:
Duke @ GEORGIA TECH (Maybe the Devils should have saved some of those points they wasted on UVA last week.)
BC @ North Carolina State(I don't know if this is an upset or not but I have to pick some.)
Western Kentucky @ VA TECH (Boy you've got the give Western Ky credit. They'll play anybody.)
Florida State @ MIAMI

Georgia Southern @ CHATTANOOGA (Have th MOCs beat anybody worth a damn this year? Well this is their big chance)

I think I will continue sending my picks via e-mail because that allows you to save a draft. I tried to cut and paste into the comment box and the formatting is ugly.

I'll post Cullen's picks here. He's right - the formatting is ugly, but not as ugly has his scratchers. And if you've upgraded from that Commodore 64 you should be fine.

Week 6

> Duke at GA TECH (I hope this blog is as successful as Ron's Dungeons and Dragons blog. If he starts talking about his +4 Charmed Longstaff I won't know if he got his blogs mixed up or if that's just some code for Kristy to break out the candles, incense and Sarah McLaughlin CD so he can be in the mood when he gets home from whatever he does)

Rob's picks. By the way, this is a perfect example of why they still use vacuum-tube computers in schools and no government entity will take debit or credit cards but WILL accept personal checks.

And Palin better know McCain's regulatory history. As vice president, she'll be the one primarily in charge of changing his adult diaper.

I like email. I know email. I am an email man. And don't be fooled ladies and gents. Blog=Blowhardingness. And Ron is fired up believe you me. It starts innocently enough with the pool, but soon enough, pages and pages of rants about Palin not knowing McCain's Regulatory History.

TheSportsNetwork.com put in it's pre-game writeup that Elon is the best offense Furman has faced this year. Which would be true except Furman did play Virginia Tech... Oh, and by the way, as of now, Furman is the best pass D in the conference. Of course, they did give up a SoCon record to this same Phoenix team last season. Should be a good battle. I'm glad it's on TV. Oh wait, all of Furman's good games are NOT on TV this season. But that Mars Hill clash was front and center...

I wasn't trying to avoid the Citadel/App game...

I'm taking APP, for the same reason I picked JMU against the Mounted: Citadel doesn't have a true measuring stick game this season. Although App with a less than 100% Edwards and second string RB does worry me a little.

ACC
Duke at JACKETS Somehow, Paul Johnson will convince Tech that Duke has 30 more scholarships.

BC at North Carolina State For some reason, I'm obsessed with picking State. It's so hard not to. Why?

Western Kentucky at TECH As Rob said, getting your ass handed to you in back-to-back weeks by Virginia Tech has to be excruciating, Amy. Good thing I have eight weeks between that happening to Furman and Virginia.

Florida State at MIAMI Funny how this game went from the season-opener to a meaningless early-October yawnfest. I never thought I'd say this, but thanks, 'Noles and Canes, for ruining the ACC's national reputation.

UCONN at North Carolina I'm back to picking against UNC out of spite. Fuckers fuck me every week. And, by the way, UCONN - you're all bad and shit playing every ACC school. You'd better keep winning.

FAIRYLAND at Virginia According to the L.A. Times, UVA is the worst I-A team in all the land. Did I mention that Virginia's basketball team is picked 12th in the ACC preseason poll? JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!!! THANKS, DAD, YOU SON OF A BITCH!!!!!

SEC

GATORS at Arkansas Sorry if that was over the line. I've got a lot of anger.

South Carolina at MISSISSIPPI Holtz, Spurrier - when will they realize South Carolina needs to just kill the program?

Kentucky at BAMA Sorry, Bob, but I think the Slide is legitimately good

Auburn at DANDY Remember what I said about State up there? Well, multiply it times 10. I see Vanderbilt, and my picking boner lifts the keyboard off my lap. What? We're all friends here ...

Northern Illinois at VOLS Rob, that Fulmer-MAC joke was awesome and untoppable.

SoCon
Samford at WESTERN CAROLINA Why? I just want the Catakitties to at least be better than Samford. It occurs to me, I have no idea what Samford's mascot is.

SPERMIN at Elon It's still Spermin until they beat App, or at least make it to the quarters. But I really like their chances, seriously. There's no fucking way Scott Riddle sets another SoCon record.

Citadel at SNATACHALIAN STATE Rob and I have already had this conversation, but how the fuck is the Shitadel riding so high in the poll thanks to wins over Webber International, Princeton and Western? Really? Clemson beat 'em by 30, and we all see how good the Tigers are. Next thing you know, the Bulldogs will be on the Republican national ticket.

SOUTHERN at Chattanooga Assuming the bus driver has any idea how to leave Statesboro after 19 straight home games.

Pac 10/Big 12 headliners

Oregon State at UTES (Thursday) Hey, who won this game? I seriously don't know.

TEXAS TECH at Kansas State Funny how Texas Tech is good two years in a row. What's the secret, Al Groh would like to know.

HORNS at Colorado Nobody taking the bait, eh? Can't blame you.

JIZZOURI at Nebraska Jizzouri. Has there ever been a better dirty pun in the picks race?

Stanford at NOTRE DAME I just threw up in my mouth picking them.

Arizona State at CAL Take away the Rays, and not one single team I've wanted to win in the baseball playoffs has won a game yet. And Mark Texeira is doing great. Fucking cocksucker.

Oregon at USC Sadly, Ducks and Trojans do not lend themselves to as many sophomoric jokes. Beastiality jokes, maybe, but I'll leave those to Cullen.

Head-scratchers

MEMPHIS at Alabama-Birmingham I had no idea this was Friday, and I swear to Christ I have no idea who won.

BEARCATS at Marshall Ditto

UNLV at Colorado State

Illinois at MICHIGAN

AKRON at Kent

Ohio State at BADGERS I mean, somebody in the Big 10 has to show some balls eventually, right? No, probably not.

NFL

Kansas City at CAROLINA

DA BEARS at Detroit

Atlanta at FUDGE PACKERS Get it? That's a gay joke, compliments of John Boy and Billy

CHARGERS at Miami

Seattle at GIANTS

Washington at PHILLY Reality, please reintroduce yourself to Jason Campbell. Of course, it would have been nicer before last week when the guy I played in fantasy picked him up off the waiver wire and used him to beat me.

Tennessee at BALLSMORE

Indianapolis at HOUSTON I believe in Schaub

Tampa Bay at DENVER

Buffalo at ARIZONA Buffalo is just not a 5-0 team

PATS at San Francisco

Cincinnati at PHALLUS Good thing I have Carson Palmer and Chris Perry

Pittsburgh at JAGS Just because I'm sick of the Steelers on prime time.

Minnesota at SCREW ORLEANS (Monday)
